National Geographic Israel's award-winning in-house photographer and longtime Delphis volunteer, Dafna Ben Nun , conducts photo expeditions around the world and documents nature in all its glory, with her focus on animals in their natural habitat.
This image shows the tail of a young beluga whale, photographed by Dafna Ben Nun at the Arctic in 2011.
Beluga is actually the name for the white whale ( Delphinapterus leucas ), one of two species of whales in the family of cetaceans. This impressive marine mammal, distinguished by its white color and unique head structure, lives in the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions.
The word "beluga" originates from the Russian word meaning "white."
Thanks to their white color and their special communication (in the form of sound), belugas have earned the nickname "the canaries of the sea." A symbol of the beauty and fragility of nature.
This work is being sold as part of the "Artists for Marine Mammals" fundraiser. All proceeds are dedicated to the continued protection of marine mammals in Israel.
