SeaBeyond - Blue Bridges
Regional cooperation for the conservation of the Mediterranean monk seal
The Mediterranean monk seal ( Monachus monachus ) is one of the rarest mammals in the world and the only species of seal in the Mediterranean Sea. Only at the beginning of this century was it classified as Critically Endangered (CR) by the IUCN, and researchers estimated that the species would disappear from the world within three generations. However, in recent years, the population seems to be recovering against all odds. Single individuals observed moving between the coasts of different countries, including Israel, have highlighted the need for joint regional action to conserve the species and restore its habitats.
From this opportunity, the Delphis Association's initiative to establish a regional center for cooperation, research and education was born, which will work to strengthen regional cooperation and contribute to changing Israel's image in the world as an enterprising, leading and environmentally responsible country.
The 'SeaBeyond - Blue Bridges' project operates with the support of the Ministry for Regional Cooperation and in collaboration with universities, research institutions, government bodies and environmental organizations from the region, to promote the conservation of monk seals through scientific research, community education and regional dialogue between the countries of the Mediterranean basin.
